SPARTA - MONEMVASIA & OLYMPIA TOUR

With this three day tour in ancient Sparta, Monemvasia and Olympia you will see another aspect of the ancient Greek civilization. Unlike the Athenians, the Spartans set their lives according to war and for that reason were the best soldiers in the known world. Monemvasia is a very unique town as it is actually a small island in shape of a rock connected with the coast with a bridge. It will give you a taste from the medieval Greece which is very little known.

Monemvasia is the proof that the Byzantine history and all civilizations developed after the ancient one have to survive at its shadow. Last but not least Olympia, where the Olympic Games were born and the place from where the Olympic flame starts travelling the world to give the signal for the Games nowadays. Travel to Olympia with us and you will discover the true colors of the games and the importance of Olympia in the ancient world.

Our tour starts with a two and a half hours drive among beautiful scenery of the Greek countryside and after a short stop to Corinth Canal, we will Sparta. There we will visit the archaeological museum with antiquities of Sparta and Laconia. The exhibits and the findings from the great sanctuaries of Sparta hold the most prominent position. The museum visitors will have the opportunity to admire retrieved material, sculptures and various artefacts. The site of Sparta is just as interesting with the remaining of the ancient theater, the Acropolis and other public and private buildings.

Mystras

Our next stop will be the fortified town of Mystras. Mystras was the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries and soon it became a significant military, cultural and religious center. Its natural beauty is captivating as well as it stands on a mountain 634 m. height with an amazing view of the valley.

Monemvasia

Then we will drive to Monemvasia where we will spend the night. The next morning we will visit the fortitude town with its narrow streets where you will see the remains of the fort, old cannons and byzantine churches all very well preserved and of extreme beauty. The castle was used during the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Ottomans. Monemvasia will impress you with the simplicity of its beauty but also with its rich history and the immense view of the open sea.

Messini

On our way to Messini you will have the change to visit the caves of Diros, which are among the most beautiful sites in the world. Our next visit will be at the archaeological site of Messini. Messini is an ancient town which is well preserved as excavations revealed all of the important buildings mentioned by the historians, such as the temple of Zeus, the theatre, the walls, the stadium and many others. Then we will drive towards the Palace of Nestor. A significant archaeological finding as it is one of the most well preserved buildings of the Neolithic Era. In the palace you will be able to walk through store rooms, workshops, baths, light wells, reception rooms and a sewage system. After the palace we will drive to Kalamata where we will spend the night.

Olympia

The next morning you will visit the sacred site of Olympia, the place where the Olympic Games where born. You will wonder around the place that the first Olympic Games were taking place at first as a religious celebration and then till today as a celebration of the human body and spirit. There you will see temple where his famous statue was standing made of gold and ivory dedicated to Zeus, the father of all gods and all men. The site also shows that Olympia increasingly became one of the most sacred places not only in Greece but all around the Mediterranean. You will see the stadium of the Olympic Games that could fit 45.000 people along with the buildings where the athletes were staying and practicing. The museum is one of the most important in Greece and the main protagonist is Zeus and is known mostly because of the statues. The statues are beautiful and will astonish you not only with their details but also with the philosophy behind them. The visit follows a meal at a local traditional restaurant and then we will drive back to Athens.
