ARGOLIS & SPARTA TOUR

The present tour drives you through two of the dominant city-states in ancient Greece, Corinth and Sparta and the regions that influenced. Along the way we will visit places and sites that contributed to Greek history in various periods.

Corinth

Our tour starts with a stop at the Corinth Canal, which divides Peloponnese from the mainland of Greece. After the Canal we will visit the archaeological site and the museum of ancient Corinth. Before your visit to the site of ancient Corinth, the small but significant museum will give a taste of the city’s advanced civilization. The art, such as mosaics as long as ritual and everyday items show a very refined culture for you to discover. Then you will appreciate it more when you will walk among great architectural structures such as the temple of Apollo, and Bema, the place where St. Paul stood and talked to the people about the new religion. Next stop is the acropolis of Mycenae. There you will witness one of the greatest civilizations in Europe that has its roots in the Neolithic Era. The tombs, and the walls along with the famous Gate of the Lions, stand there and amaze us for centuries. The museum findings complete the picture of this great’s civilization’s contribution as you will see tasteful art and jewelry but also weapons and war equipment. Then    you will enjoy your meal at Nafplion before discovering the town. You will admire the neoclassical architecture and the Castles surround the town such as Palamide, Bourzi and Akronaflplia as long as administration buildings since Nafplion was the first capital of Greece. Our last stop before heading to Sparta is Epidaurus where the ancient theatre is located in the sacred Askleipieion. The theatre astonishes the visitors with its acoustics but it also shows the Greek’s level of knowledge of the human soul. The site that it is located in was dedicated to Asclepius the god of the doctors and was also used as a hospital and a research’s center. Then we will drive to Sparta where we will spend the night.

Sparta

Our first stop the next morning will be at the archaeological museum with antiquities of Sparta and Laconia. The objects exhibited cover the time period between the Neolithic and the Later Roman eras and the findings from the great sanctuaries of Sparta hold the most prominent position. The museum visitors will have the opportunity to admire retrieved material, sculptures and various artefacts, the most important of which being the remains of Roman mosaic floors from Sparta. The site of Sparta is just as interesting with the remains of the ancient theater, the Acropolis and other public and private buildings.

Mystras

Our next stop will be the fortified town of Mystras. Mystras was the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries. Was established in the 13th century and it was not always part of the Byzantine Empire as the venetians concurred it too. It became a significant military, cultural and religious center and the last emperor of the Byzantine Empire came from there. Its natural beauty is captivating as well as it stands on a mountain 634 m. high with an amazing view of the valley. Then after your meal we will head back to Athens.
